How Has COVID-19 Affected the Jobs Market in the Healthcare Sector?

There is no question that Covid-19 has had an impact on every industry sector, but none more so than healthcare. As we continue to recruit for roles in the healthcare industry, we see a change in how that recruitment is taking place.

It’s important to understand that care providers must always adhere to CQC requirements. No matter the outside issues caused by the pandemic, the CQC (Care Quality Commission) sets out fundamental standards for care.

One of these standards is that staff must be suitably qualified, competent and experienced, and that they must be given the support, training, and supervision needed to maintain the highest standards.

This is one area where care providers recruiting in 2020 have faced challenges. With existing staff becoming ill themselves or going into isolation due to family members being exposed to Coronavirus, there has been a huge increase in the number of roles available. Care providers have had to increase recruitment quickly to fill the gaps.

Of course, there is not a bank of experienced care staff waiting on standby, which has left the healthcare sector with a quandary – how to take on a large number of new staff quickly, with little to no experience.

The recruitment process is where interviewers can get an impression of the candidate and make sure they are the right person for the job. In 2020, this process has never been so important. Interviewers are looking for potential staff who can quickly be trained, and gain the experience needed to maintain the CQC standards.

Interviewing for a role in care in 2020

If you have an interview for a role in the healthcare sector, another change you will see is that the application and interview process take place online, at least in the initial stages. After the first video interview, many providers are still following up with a face-to-face conversation.

If you are applying for a role in the healthcare sector, read our blogs for plenty of good tips and advice about preparing for a virtual interview.
